I. Dreampath Discussion:  Dream Foods.

More commonly expressed as 'food for thought' or 'soul food', we seek constant nourishment in our dreams in the same variety and food groups that are offered on the 'menu' in reality.   Symbolically,  these dream foods represent the physical ingredients and combination of ideas, attitudes, and spiritual ideals needed to keep our souls happy, productive, balanced, and fulfilled.

If we dream of bright and vibrant fruits and vegetables, poultry, protein, fish, and 'meat', then it is a request for us to add these 'staples' to our diet, as they provide plenty of nutrients and healthy variety.   On the other hand, food highlighted in unpleasant and distasteful ways in a dream suggests the need to eliminate these items from consumption, and our literal diets. We need fruits and vegetables to stay physically healthy, but also spiritually, as in 'fruits of the spirit' - the creative gifts we must also nurture in order to sustain a healthy, happy and productive life.

Whatever the application, the meaning will usually be connected to a request to alter our physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual diets to accommodate a new or emerging life path.

II. Symbols and Scenes: Feasts & Fruits

"Feasts" are celebrations on a spiritual path, representing fellowship at the 'banquet table' in the name and spirit of Love.   We depend on certain foods to nourish and sustain us through all events and transitions in our lives.   More than a cause for celebration, it is a request to renew again our commitment to a spiritual path and sit at the symbolic banquet table.

''Fruit'' offered, displayed or eaten in a dream is generally a request to add passion to our lives, and maintain a healthy spiritual balance.   We want to enjoy the 'fruits' of our labor, but sometimes get sidetracked into seeking other nourishment.  The type of fruit will give us clues:  strawberries represent birthmarks, passion fruit - that evolving from the womb, bananas - high in potassium are potent supplements, apples provide the 'seed' of creativity, and  'grapes' become a bouquet of flavor, the symbolic cup of salvation ...

III. Threads and Themes - Dream Interpretation

  The Family Feast

Banquet Table.  Formal dining room. Linen tablecloth. Big spread.  Appetizers, fresh fruits, salad greens, vegetables, main dishes, desserts, sides, fresh fish, the finest international cuisine imaginable, overflowing in every direction.  High-back chairs.  Black Man in a tux walks up to me with a silver platter and smiles.  Invitation in a white envelope in the middle of the platter.  He calls me by my name,  my full name, hands me the invitation and says, "Your presence is requested."  He smiles again, bows in deference, and leaves.   I am astonished.  Want to know who sent me the invitation.   I think about opening the envelope ...

Background Discussion:

The dining facility, meal, menu, display and food preparation in dreams reveal important clues about how w are faring over-all and what is needed in the way of nourishment.  More importantly, food choices in dreams represent the nurturing characteristics we have and seek in others, because this is why we also eat:  to calm, soothe and assuage the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual hunger within.    As a realistic example, when we crave sweet things, it is often a substitute for that which we crave even more - the sweet embrace  from One we love.  Other cravings, such as meat, starch, and bread, for instance, represent the 'bread of life', or something of 'substance' which will 'stick' ... to fill and fuel both spirit and soul ...  (soulful)  So, let's look at the application.

Application - Discussion of Symbols:

Keeping in mind that only the dreamer can ultimately know the meaning and application of any dream symbol, large banquets and formal dining room settings tend to represent 'family' and/or community fellowship in a spiritual setting, represented in this dream by both the formal table "spread", (fresh fruits, salad greens, fish, vegetables, desserts) and the "cloth" in the combined symbol of the linen tablecloth.  (That which is created to clothe, cover, line a service table, as in an altar cloth).  We can draw this spiritual association from the rest of the symbols in the dream as Well - the high-back chairs (backed on high, seated on high), black waiter in black tuxedo (formal service), silver platter (fine 'service'), and the engraved invitation (written 'in script', scripted, ordained).  "Your Presence is Requested" denotes authority, formal expectation, 'sealed' purpose.  The envelope (to envelop, embrace)  is delivered 'in hand' (already possess, have immediate access to, know) to the dreamer, who hesitates .... (hesitation = trust dilemma, confidence issue).   And this is both the dream task and ultimate conflict:  do I stay and eat? Open the envelope (read: risk)?  Or choose another path ...

The Spiritual Path:

To think about opening an envelope in a dream, rather than 'just doing it', signifies a literal crossroad, or spiritual rite of passage unfolding in the dreamer's life.  When we receive an invitation in reality, it is usually a formal request to  'show up' at a specific date and time, and participate in the stated celebratory event or occasion.  So too, in a dream, an unopened invitation, engraved and "already delivered", represents an opportunity and formal request to be 'present' (symbolized by the language, 'your presence is requested'), or fully embrace all that is offered in the celebratory event - here, it is the 'meal', the 'banquet', the  family 'feast' (of a life) that is offered.

The invitation is delivered on a silver platter by a 'black man in a tux'.   The phrase "delivered on a silver platter", symbolizes service and prosperity, an immediate offering in hand, denoting both physical wealth and Divine intuition  .... the ability and capacity within each of us to "divine" that which we cannot readily see or understand on our own, but will often sense ...taste ... in a different dimension of experience ...  The color 'black' tends to represent critical judgment, (non-forgiving; i.e., how hard we are on ourselves) but also clearly represents that which is in 'black and white', engraved, 'written in stone'.  In a Word, it is a sacred symbol for both commitment and calling on a very defined spiritual path ... that which has been pre-ordained and recorded for all time ...  "signed, sealed, and delivered", already decided  in Time ... it is up to the dreamer, of course, (as is true of all of us) to accept the invitation ...   "Your presence is requested" ...

Summary:   All we ever have to do is show up and be "Present" - to claim our place at the banquet table and share in the 'celebratory feast'.  We all have a place, a purpose, a calling ... the Gift is in the knowing ...
