 I. Dreampath Discussion:  Dream Marriages

Dream marriages and wedding ceremonies symbolize the union of conflicting parts and a ‘readiness’ on the part of the dreamer to commit to new ideas, adventures and spiritual enlightenment, but also symbolize  less celebrated unions, like the ‘marriage of ideas’ in a creative endeavor, marriage of partners or companies in a business merger, or matrimony and symbolic harmony in conflicted relationships, such as those we often experience  with bosses, co-workers, friends, family and potential mates.  (The setting of the dream will usually make the focus clear).

Wearing the wrong bridal clothes, runaway grooms and forgetting to send out invitations are common themes, for instance, denoting the level of anxiety surrounding both the fit and fear of the commitment (read: worthiness) involved;  however, in caricature almost, these dreams surface around real engagements and approaching wedding dates to help us navigate these wedding ‘jitters’ by allowing us to put our feelings in perspective.  The circumstances of the dream ‘marriage’ will make the application clear, but will almost always point to the need for harmony or the successful resolution of past or current conflicts.  For example, weddings with bosses, business partners and ex-friends might highlight the need for harmony in an authoritarian, personal or business relationship.   Whatever the issue, wedding dreams will point specifically to the truth of our hearts, and provide all the information we need to navigate through these powerful transitions.

In this ultimate sense, marriage dreams thus represent spiritual completion, and surface after long periods of discord in our lives, to symbolize that we have, in fact, achieved the harmony we seek in our own hearts, and those of others, to whom we are bound in sacred and singular relationships.  And, when we are worried during these tremendous transitions about our ability to ‘go the distance’ - commit, in earnest to this business of ‘life’, to others, and the responsibilities of ‘love’ - our dreams teach us these skills in rich and intimate landscapes, and how well we will succeed, if only we can entertain the moment in matrimony when all conflicting parts are whole and healed, in one integrated Soul.

II. Symbols and Scenes: Veils & Vows

"Veils" are worn in weddings and other sacramental rites, to denote sanctity, purity of heart, innocence, and at one time,  spiritual chastity, or a bride’s readiness to enter into the holy sacrament of marriage.  The veil is still a symbol of submission and servitude in some cultures, but primarily represents a conscious psychic opening - as in ‘piercing the veil’ of darkness to reach a new level, spiritual enlightenment.  A face behind a veil in a dream, or other ‘veiled’ communication on the other hand, suggests an element of secrecy involved in personal or professional dealings.  Ultimately, as a mystical symbol, a ‘veil’  represents the mysteries of Faith and ultimate quest – to see beyond the ‘veil’  of reason, and seek illumination of spiritual Truths and Knowledge.

''Vows'' on the other hand, are exchanged in churches and courts, or other traditional settings, are holy “covenants” with God and others, and represent a spiritual ‘rite of passage’ to a new life, path, profession or spiritual calling.   Pledged and sworn in ceremonial oaths, as in marriage, the priesthood, and other liturgical rites, vows symbolize a sacred promise.   More commonly, these are the vows we take to ‘tell the truth’, ‘commit to Christ’, or ‘do no harm’ as witnesses, priests, healers and counselors-at-law; or the allegiance pledged to countries, codes and constitutions in public “swearing in ceremonies” as officers, educators, public servants and world leaders.   Vows in a church or similar setting represent a spiritual calling, whereas vows exchanged in a court or public ceremony symbolize the call to service in a public capacity.

III. Threads and Themes - My Wedding Day - Dream Interpretation

  My Wedding Day

It's my wedding day, and I'm wearing a red wedding dress, when I know I want white. I start to walk down the aisle and my fiancé tells me I look beautiful in my red dress. I was surprised. Then I realize that there is no one sitting at the lined up fold out white chairs. My Mom and Dad were the only ones there and were standing at the altar at our sides. I remember thinking in my head oh my gosh, I forgot to invite all my friends and family!

A Note About Dream Interpretation:  Although my role is to help illuminate the landscape on the dream path, only the dreamer can know the meaning, because each dream is tailored specifically to the language and life circumstances of its dreamer, and thus surfaces with healing wisdom specific to the dreamer's needs, prayers, and understanding in the ultimate quest for spiritual healing and happiness.  Because this is the goal and task of every dream, I believe - to be happy in our lives and with ourselves, as we learn to embrace an authentic Presence.

Wedding Dream Interpretation: Colors & Clothes

It is common to have dreams about wedding ceremonies  when we are ready to commit to a new direction in our lives.   Commitments  in dreams reflect these transitions, and thus tend to represent a momentous present or future undertaking, to persons, projects or specific paths.

The dream may be pointing realistically to an upcoming ceremony that will be recognized for its sacred connection and 'traditional' significance ... i.e., a significant accomplishment in a life cycle event - as in an educational, professional or personal 'rite of passage’ paired with a sacred element, suggesting an initiation or spiritual graduation to a new level of insight and wisdom.  This is highlighted and affirmed in the dream by the sacred 'marriage' symbol with the 'parents' present...  i.e., mother Mary and Christ … symbolizing spiritual unity, but also by the 'walk' and wedding clothes - especially the red bridal gown.

Colors in dreams represent the continuous flow of energy and emotion, and how aligned we are, in essence, with our spiritual centers.   As a symbol for fertility and passion, love, creative power and emotional intensity, red represents blood bonds and matters of the heart.   It also represents the womb, spiritual cleansing and initiation, while white represents holiness and mystical illumination, symbolizing the ultimate transformation from spiritual darkness into light.  As a common symbol, it stands for sanctity, ecstasy, joy and spiritual harmony, the ultimate quest of an enlightened soul.

Dream Interpretation - Personal Path:

In the context of this dream, wearing the red wedding dress in public is quite a positive spin here, because it signifies the dreamer’s true readiness to commit passionately and truthfully (all colors showing) to a sacred relationship or spiritual initiation.  She may believe the intensity is out of proportion with the social reality, symbolized by the desire for spiritual harmony in a more traditional color, white, but is quite surprised (we discover) when her fiancée (opposite creative energy) tells her how beautiful she looks in red.   It is after all, the color of the heart!

So, a wedding gown on a bride who believes she is wearing the wrong colors, or fashion, symbolizes a concern about authenticity in a sacred setting or spiritual relationship.  We know this, by the dreamer’s language:  “I am wearing a red wedding dress, when I know I want to wear white”.

The desire to wear white over red is a quest for balance, harmony and spiritual purity.  Nonetheless, note the color ‘red’ seems to be a perfect fit for this bride, despite her concern that it is the wrong ‘color’ (a most common worry in wedding dreams), because her feelings are so exposed.  We tend to turn crimson for instance, when feeling self-conscious, and the clothes we wear in dreams will often reflect these innermost feelings, attitudes and desires.

Dream Interpretation - Spiritual Path:

This deeper, spiritual concern about worthiness is also represented by the absence of ‘friends and family’ at the wedding.   Only the ‘authoritarian’ figures are there, it seems - the parents - but too, they are the models for all that we hold sacred in this world, because they are sacredly charged with providing all we need to be nourished in heart and soul, so we can evolve and grow and ultimately set out on a distinguished path in our own shoes.  In dreams, parents thus represent the spiritual guides who prepare us for life and then  ‘give us away’ when we are ready to embrace and “announce” an authentic presence in this world.

We are identified by friends and family, and are connected by these blood-bonds and  fellowship communities, because they ‘birth’ us, and give us wings. But, keep in mind also, these are the souls we most admire and turn to when we are ready to take huge, new, undertakings in our lives, so their affirmation is important, as is the collective blessing and wisdom of those who have so sustained us for so long.

So, the absence of guests at a wedding symbolizes a real sense of missing something, not connecting with something vital and important, but may also signal a reluctance to announce with authenticity, this huge step in life to be presented to the world, in sync with self and soul at last.  It is a huge step for anyone.  Claiming an authentic presence and purpose in the universe.  So,  while forgetting to send out invitations in a dream wedding may just point to pre-wedding jitters in a real wedding event, it is usually a request for the dreamer to remember to be Present, too, in not just a bystander, and to always remember family and friends, how much this connection in ‘blood’ is needed to keep going, because it is a creative part well-worth remembering!    Because when we are ready at long last to take that ceremonial 'step', and present ourselves with passionate Purpose to the world, these are the 'colors' we own and wear ...

The ones that announce who we are in spectacular array and say, in truth of fact, “ I am here.  I am present.  I am ready to take this walk, and honor my heart in so doing.”

Summary:

In its truest sense then, dreaming of a wedding and marriage to one we Love (our own heart) signals an integrated union, spiritual completion, and harmonious resolution of warring factions and ancient conflicts.  With the matrimony of intellect and insight, ideas & individuality, and too, the creative energy of both masculine and feminine instincts, we emerge integrated and whole, no longer at odds with self or soul, but One, both in spirit and sacred accord with the Universe ...
