Dreams I. Dreampath Discussion: Dream Pictures. Picture dreams provide a visual map in every dimension, form and expression of experience, and appear in vivid and contrasting textures, so we will not forget the imprint of the image, or message. In picture puzzles and perfect scenes, picture postcards and finished frames, family photos and video links, we have a portrait of who we are and how we are seen ... and, whatever the form ... hanging portrait or 4x5 print, photo copy or photograph, Power Point slide or professional plaque, the context communicates a message about the personal, professional, or spiritual image of the dreamer. Picture Dreams teach us to focus the image and reframe our views, so we may know a true reflection in relation to others, ourselves, and ultimately, the "big picture". II. Symbols and Scenes: Pictures and Photographers
“Pictures” - represent the portrait of who we are or what we see at the time the dream is occurring, and tend to highlight the area of the dreamer's life that is in need of a closer view. For instance, smudges on a photo correlate with a clouded image, and the emotional reality for the dreamer. We often dream of imperfect self-photos, symbolizing how we feel, in truth, about our personal, professional or spiritual attributes or physical characteristics. The type, time and quality of the picture will give important clues both about context and meaning.
“Photographers” preserve the image of something, someone, or an event in 'action' . Look to the type of photography and object in view to understand the application ... Is it a public or private occasion? Formal or casual event? Object or Performance? The details link together to explain the purpose of the photographer. For instance, "paparazzi" peering into windows, suggests celebrity and history in the making -
III. Threads and Themes - Dream Interpretation:
First
layer – the spiritual path : The dream action takes place outside a cruise ship (ocean symbol), with police officers (symbol of spiritual authority), clarifying a spiritual focus. However, we also know by the very clear direction, "You are on your own", that the dreamer has been called to a specific path, and will not be permitted to go where others go and r 'cruise' through life. An audible instruction from one in authority in a dream is a very pronounced symbol, making the spiritual focus and direction, clear. Second
layer –
the personal path : The dream is asking the dreamer to accept this destiny and forge a different path than others are permitted to take. But the conflict - a poor self-image - must first be resolved, represented by the language "my smile wasn't quite right" ... an interesting play on words, because rearranged, it says, "my smile wasn't quiet", pinpointing the healing focus: taming aggression. Smiles symbolize well-being ... the self-confidence and esteem we must all have to remain healthy and happy and 'whole' .... and teeth represent anger and aggression, as in all that we 'bite into' or 'chew on' when processing information. Other phrases also come to mind - 'taking the bite out something' denotes a need to tame and heal an aggressive streak, whereas ''all teeth glaring'' suggests an aggressive and defensive posture. So, supported on its face by the dreamer's comment that 'my smile is not quite right', tends to clarify the anger as an impediment to well-being and personal growth, because forward movement in any direction is prohibited until the dreamer "screams" ..... lets all of the aggression out ....and then smiles for the photographer, the only requirement (plus going it alone) necessary to go forward. Dreams ultimately surface to help us heal from the wounds we can and cannot see, so we can get to the destinations our hearts want to take us. The knowledge may be a bit tough to 'chew on' ... but, we only remember dreams when we are ready to do the work of the dream, and take to heart the lessons we learn in safe and sacred spaces. The goal of every dream is to help us heal and be happy. The task of the dream is to be happy. IV. Messenger Mic - Why do we remember some dreams and not others? Another excellent question. Well, the short answer is: we remember dreams when we are ready to absorb the information and own responsibility for the work. If we are guarded and protected by strong defense mechanisms .... like anger .... we are not yet ready to accept a healing balm, because the wounds are still too fresh. Anger is protective in that it shields raw and tender emotion, but eventually, the need to love and be loved is more powerful than any need to sequester our souls in dark rooms. So, it is not that we don't remember ... we simply choose to forget .... until we are strong enough to remember and reclaim who we are in safety ... Phyllis A.
