In Tribute, Healing Star Dream Path profiles the music of  Karen Kelly (1963-2006)  in Follow Your Heart Music  with a preview of  "TONIGHT" .... (mp3 5.5mb)  After a long illness, Karen lost her courageous battle with cancer On August  9, 2006.

A while ago, I asked Kelly to talk to me about her songwriting craft, and specifically, the genesis of Tonight in-the-making - how it came to life, and what the songwriting process is ...  Here are her thoughts ...

"Sands 

 

 - I was on my way home, late at night in my car,    (on a New England autumn evening - rich with  melancholy) and just starting humming the melody acappella.  

When I got home I found some chords to support it, and then I made a cup of tea, and the lyrics really came almost as "stream of consciousness'. It took about ten minutes to write. 

Basically, I was pining over a  missed opportunity    with someone that I could no longer find, because when I was diagnosed with cancer, I was shipped off to Maryland for a year, & lost track of that person  "thru  the  ethers" .... because I couldn't tell it in person ... Karen

Most of my songs don't come that simply or immediate. The lyrics  might come quick, but the chord structures took a while - etc. I heard Bob Dylan when I was 8 yrs. old, and he became my hero. At the same time it's so hard to hold yourself to that standard. But I suppose if you're going to "go for it" , better to aim at genius - and hope for the best.         

On occasion, the songs come to me in dreams. The problem with that is that I have a very difficult time trying to memorize the melody upon awakening. But when they do come to me in dream it's always just the melody. No lyrics/chords. It's usually a piano or violin playing the melody, but it's recorded on an old Victrola, which is always in the same room, in the same dream. The only thing that changes is the melodies.

SANDS OF TIME - Like most albums, is full of snapshots. The title  track "Crab in the Sands of Time", is about my living in  remission from cancer. Ruthie 's - Is about my mother....a classical pianist - etc. The songs weren't written to go into a CD together, that came after. So it's not a "concept" album, bascially it's a songwriter's essence during a two year period. I didn't want it all to be about surviving cancer, but at the same time, it's part of my life, and I can't pretend it's not there - either.
